Text Selection

Picking different texts for the classroom is a very important thing for a teacher to do. When selecting texts for a classroom it is very important for the teacher to keep in mind the Iowa Common Core Standards for literacy and the content area in which the books are being used. By selecting books that can enhance the content-areas, teachers can provide their students with rich and meaningful instruction. A teacher also wants to keep in mind the grade level in which the books are being used. Choosing books that meet the standards is important because as teachers we are required to meet them. We also want to make sure that the different texts that we are selecting are appropriate, relevant and allow students to develop the skills and strategies that they need to become great readers. To me it is also important that I select books that are engaging for my students. I want the books to present the information so that the students can understand them.

I will have a classroom library in my classroom. The students will then be able to access the books for independent use. They will also be in the classroom so that students can use them as additional resources. In my classroom I know that I need to provide texts for all of the readers. They will be at different levels so it is important that I provide texts for the lower learners and the higher learners. I need to make sure that I will have texts that challenge the students as well. It is very important that I provide a variety of texts for my students.
